September 11th: Friendship

August 31, 2013

In the middle hour we discussed friendship. One our our members felt bad that she was not a good friend to her childhood friend with meningiomyelocele spina bifida because her friend was teased by fellow students and she never comforted her.

I feel like I am not a good friend to my biking partner because I do not talk much.  However we must remember that we spend time with our friends and enjoy their company as they are. They in turn feel comfortable and accepted and feel like they belong. That is enough. My father was the same way. I wondered why he wanted me home when we did not interact. He just wanted to be near me.

One of the other members stated she has a few long time special friends that are often surprises when she calls once in a blue moon. She makes friends one on one by asking questions. Another member stated he preferred friendship with bright individuals on the autism spectrum because they were direct, interesting and interested in what he had to say. Our group is also a venue for friendship as we feel comfortable saying what is on our mind without offending anyone and we are among like minded people.
