March 26th: Self advocacy

The path to successful employment and relationships is self advocacy. One does not necessarily have to spell out a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder or Asperger’s syndrome. But you should be able to tell a prospective employer or partner your strengths and weaknesses at the proper time in the interview process or the relationship. You should also be able to tell them what accommodations you will need to become successful and productive long term because that is what they are looking for. You may need time out periods, different lighting, a more private space, and or interaction one on one instead of in a group, etc. The discussion was fruitful.
