April 23: Worry, beneficial in the right doses.

April 23, 2014

My friend referred me this article to read http://www.macleans.ca/society/the-new-worry-epidemic/ about the new epidemic of worry and thought it may apply to our population. It does state that bright people tend to worry more. However, when thought in a positive light, the bright ones use it to their advantage. I used to think about what could go wrong with a procedure and consider each step and piece of equipment and approach before I started. It made the procedures safer and more successful for my sick children. “People unable to worry fail to see future dangers.”

Worry can be crippling as well when the mind is overpowering and there is no outside activity to set it back to reality. This may happen with the autistic who is in his mind and does not pick up on some input. Excessive worry may also lead to phobias and anxiety. Worry can lead to circular thought that keeps on going and going and going akin to post traumatic stress disorder.

What separates negative from positive worry? It may be the act of planning and then action. The serenity prayer is useful in this regard.

…Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.
