August 27th: Pigeon Holing or Tagging

August 18, 2014

We took an hour to discuss how people may place us in a category as on the autism spectrum and it may be difficult for us to get out. We may be mis-tagged as ADHD, stupid, rude, an asshole, manic depressive or obsessive compulsive with a whole set of connotations on the part of the observer, caretaker, parent, partner, employer or child. Rain Man was based on a character who was much more verbal than what was portrayed in the movie. Mass murderers from Colorado to Connecticut may give a false and dangerous prejudice against those on the autism spectrum. Autistic spectrum people are often thought to be sinister and odd but in reality are often honest and gullible. We also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of “coming out” as on the autism spectrum. Self awareness of your own strengths and weaknesses is important. Advocating for yourself in light of your individual strengths and weaknesses will keep people from pigeon holing or tagging you. You have to educate them about you.
