September 24th: Honesty

September 24, 2014

Honestly we talked about honesty. When should we be honest to each other and to ourselves? Those on the spectrum are often overly honest which can be hurtful. We do not beat around the bush. I reminded others of the 4 way test of things we think say or do from Rotary International:
1) Is it the truth?
2) Is it fair to all concerned?
3) Will it build good will and better friendships?
4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
ASD’s usually think about only #1 and therefore deal with truth and consequences of #2,3,4. Neurotypicals deal with lying: Truth or consequences.

The other discussion that arose is that autistics are always themselves and therefore honest about how they feel. This can lead to meltdowns and suicide attempts at times. The question came up whether we should be honest about our diagnosis? The best advice offered is that we should know and proclaim our strengths and weaknesses and advocate for ourselves but not necessarily label ourselves to people who do not yet know our strengths.
